Interior Design Questions We’re Always Asked

Over the years at Hello Saturday Interior Design, there are a handful of questions clients ask us again and again. Whether someone is building a new home, renovating, or refreshing a room, these are the things people are often unsure about.

Here are some of the most common interior design questions we hear from clients — and our thoughts.

1. Should everything match in a room?

No, everything doesn’t need to match.

We actually love a bit of clash when it comes to pattern, colour and materials — mixing things can make a space feel more interesting and personal.

That said, furniture should still go together. Dining chairs should match, the furniture style should represent each other, and sofas and occasional chairs should sit at a similar height so the space feels cohesive and balanced.

A room doesn’t need to be perfectly matched — but it should still feel like everything belongs together.

2. Is white ever a bad idea in interior design?

White is never really a bad idea, but it works best when it’s balanced with other tones.

We tend to lean towards warmer whites rather than cooler whites, and we like to bring in other elements alongside it — like timber accents, soft colour, or wallpaper on another wall.

Using white this way keeps the space feeling light, fresh and timeless, while still adding warmth and interest.

3. How early should we involve an interior designer?

As early as possible — it’s never too early to involve Hello Saturday.

If you’re building a new home or doing a major renovation, we can even get involved before the plans go to council. Sometimes it simply helps to have another sounding board to review the plans and talk through how the spaces will actually work.

Often people realise small things early on — like a hallway being too large or a room not quite meeting their needs — and it’s much easier to adjust these before anything is built.

The earlier a designer is involved, the easier it is to shape the home around how you actually want to live.

4. What should we invest in, and where can we save?

We always recommend saving for the pieces you really want.

It’s often better to wait a few months and buy the coffee table or statement piece you’ve had your eye on, rather than rushing out to buy the cheapest option just to fill the space.

Invest in a few key quality pieces and build the room around them. It’s always better to focus on quality over quantity, rather than filling a space with things you don’t truly love.

5. How do you make a home feel timeless, not trendy?

The truth is, everything eventually dates — so it’s better not to worry about that too much.

Instead, focus on creating a home you genuinely love now. Choosing classic furniture, softer colours and subtle tones tends to age more gracefully than very bright or trend-driven choices.

If you stick to natural materials, calm colours and considered furniture, the space will feel beautiful for much longer — even as styles slowly change over time.

If you’re planning a renovation, new build or interior refresh, and have questions about how to bring everything together, we’re always happy to help.

At Hello Saturday Interior Design, our goal is to create homes that feel beautiful, practical and timeless for the way you live.
